Subject: Using ntemacs remote login session
Date: Mon, 30 Sep 1996 20:10:37 -0400 (EDT)

Hi,

I have ntemacs 19-34 working great on NT 3.51 in both window and console
modes. I can't get it to work from a telnet session into my machine. I
use ataman telnet server on the NT machine, log in remotely and try

	c:\emacs\bin\emacs.bat -nw

or
	c:\emacs\bin\emacs.exe -nw

no response - telnet session freezes and I have to kill it.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

You need to run emacs.exe directly, or through emacs.bat, but not using
runemacs. A second console will only be created if you start Emacs
using runemacs.exe.

When run in console mode (-nw), Emacs changes the mode of the console
for "raw" access - I don't know whether this is supported by the telnet
server (hopefully yes, otherwise the utility of the server is greatly
reduced).

There isn't any strong reason for Emacs to switch console buffers - if
you can recompile Emacs, try commenting out the calls to
SetConsoleActiveScreenBuffer in src/ntterm.c and changing
set_terminal_modes to set cur_screen to GetStdHandle (STD_OUTPUT_HANDLE)
instead of creating a new screen buffer. I don't think anything else
should need to change.

If this makes Emacs work in tty mode over a telnet connection, then I'll
make this change for 19.35.

AndrewI

PS. If you can't recompile Emacs, I can send you a binary of 19.34 with
this change for you to try (if you have an ftp site I can upload to).
