I get the same DOS boxes under NT4.0b2 and emacs 19.33.

In addition, I thought I'd point out that you can put a shortcut to =
gnuclient in your "SendTo" folder. Then, you just have to right click to =
send the file to emacs. This avoids having to define a bunch of =
associations for files which may not be desirable (e.g., Tcl/Tk or Perl =
source).

I recently downloaded gnuserv.zip from
http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/voelker/ntemacs.html for use with
emacs-19.34 running under win95.

This package allows you to get the file association behavior whereby
double-clicking on a file causes your already running emacs to read said
file into a buffer. This works fine except each file that is read into
emacs in this manner causes a gnuclient DOS box to open. If you do this =
for
a while your task bar fills up with these gnuclient DOS boxes which =
don't go
away until you do a kill-buffer on the buffer associated with the DOS =
box.
Am I doing something wrong here, or is this an unavoidable feature of =
gnuclient?

gnuclient has an option "-q", which terminates the gnuclient process
after reading the file into emacs.

If I run gnuclient from the cmd line, I get long file names. If I
run gnuclient by association from the NT explorer I get mangled
names. Does anyone know why it would behave this way ? I'd prefer
to visit files by their non-mangled names.

There is a very easy way to change the app type of any binary:

Edit foo.exe in Emacs, isearch for "pe" and press RET. Then type M- 9 0
right (to go right 90 bytes). The character under the cursor should be
^C (this means the executable is marked as a console app). Change that
character to ^B (GUI app), and save.

Yet another gnuclient question.

The emacs window (frame) does not raise up to the front and
also does not get the focus after loading a file with gnuclient.
I even tried it with gnudoit:
   gnudoit "(raise-frame (selected-frame))"
But it didn't work, either. Does anybody know a solution.

I am using ntemacs 19.32 under Windows 95 and the gnuserv package
from cs.washington.

You need to change the variable gnuserv-frame. This hack works:

  (setq gnuserv-frame (car frame-list))

I think winfile and explorer use a different drag and drop
mechanism. I use Explorer instead of winfile. winfile only seems
to allow dropping on program items inside winfile.

     (setq gnuserv-frame (selected-frame))

will tell gnuserv to use the current existing frame. This will suffice
if you normall work with and keep one frame. It would be nice if
gnuserv.el *evaluated* the value of gnuserv-frame, so that you could
just set it to '(default-frame).

As is, if you ever delete the initial frame, guserv will revert back to
opening new frames. To make it more bullet-proof, you can use advice:

    (load-library "advice")

    (defadvice server-edit-files (before
                                  server-use-default-frame
                                  activate)
      (setq gnuserv-frame (selected-frame)))

    (defadvice server-edit-files-quickly (before
                                          server-use-default-frame-q
                                          activate)
      (setq gnuserv-frame (selected-frame)))

I think this works, if you put it in your .emacs after the
place where you load gnuserv. advice.el has a pretty complicated
activation mechanism, so YMMV.

try this:

(require 'advice)
(defadvice server-edit-files (after
                              server-raise-frame
                              activate)
  (raise-frame (selected-frame))
  (setq gnuserv-frame (selected-frame)))

(defadvice server-edit-files (after
                              server-raise-frame
                              activate)
  (raise-frame (selected-frame))
  (message "raising frame")
  (sit-for 1)
  (setq gnuserv-frame (selected-frame)))
