I've just been poking around in my VC++ CDs, and the "SDK Edition" of
InstallSHIELD has been part of the VC++ release since 4.0 at least. I can't
find any references to license requirements to use it (other than having to
have bought VC++), so it certainly looks usable from the legal standpoint
(or I haven't looked hard enough :-). How technically limited this SDK
Edition is is a separate question I don't know the answer to.

A Norweigan fellow who goes by the handle Jgaa (home.so.no/jgaa/ I
think) produces the War FTP Daemon for Win95/NT; he also produces an
install package similar to InstallShield. Both are completely free.

The SDK edition has certain limitations, such as a missing LaunchApp
(spawning another Windows process). A couple of other things are broken, I
can't remember exactly what. I discovered this the hard way, then finally
saw the light and bought the full edition which fixed all my problems.

The SDK edition will handle a simple installation, though.

Thanks, that's a useful pointer I didn't know about. But actually the
URL is http://home.sol.no/jgaa/, to save anyone else interested the need
to search for it.

Steve Kemp<stevek@epc.co.uk> has an Installshield based installation
package of Emacs 19.34.6 available. I have not experimented with this
package, but Steve says his package includes the executables and
byte-compiled Elisp, but no source.

I'll have a pointer to his web page up in a few days.

Hi,
  Recently I put together a simple Installshield installation script
 for Emacs, and am just about to update it.

  I've come up with a simple function that will attempt to write
 lisp to a users .emacs file after asking them questions.. This will
 be used in conjunction with an Extra menu, setup in the users .emacs
 file - for accessing common functions.

  Something like "Do you want to send e-mail from within Emacs?"
 will result in the correct lines being inserted into their .emacs
 file.

  Hopefully this should simplify the process for complete Emacs
 virgins.

  I was just wondering what kind of things users might like to
 have setup for them, does anybody have any opinions?

  So far I control :-

   * Sending e-mail
   * ange-ftp.el
   * cua-mode.el
   * general settings
   * Line number mode
   * Scroll bar mode (This is in anticipation of jumping to Emacs 20.?)

  Theres a simplified version available at
   http://www.tardis.ed.ac.uk/~skx/win/setup-emacs.el

Hi,
  I'd be perfectly willing to give up my code to the FSF, In fact I would
 volunteer to package up the latest version for you when the become
available
 if that would help you out.

  The main reason that I stopped at packaging 19.34.6 was lack of web space,
 which presumably wouldn't be a problem for the FSF / GNU mirrors.

  How would you like me to make the code available to you / people,
 packaged up in an archive somewhere?

  That may be tricky ... running the InstallShield build process is normally
 handled via its IDE. I'm not sure if its possible to create the build from
 a script driven mechanism.
  The InstallShield build is a tricky one to manage, as it doesn't work as
 you'd expect. Instead of the IDE keeping a track of a list of files to
 include within the installation it copies them inside the project. This
means
 that when you update a file included in the build you have to update its
 copy also. (Needless to say this caused much confusion when I was working
 on installations for my company).

  Okay, I shall upload an installation for 20.3.1, and the source project
 later on today.

  Currently I've actually been experimenting with replacing addpm.exe
 with some InstallShield code. That's the biggest single improvement
 I can think of, and its not to hard to manage either InstallShield has
 lots of functions for adding registry keys, and the like.
