Subject: How I got PGP to compile.
Date: Thu, 20 Jun 1996 12:44:15 -0700

For those of you who want to use mailcrypt with emacs, you'll probably
want a 32-bit version of PGP to play with.

Note that I've never gotten mailcrypt to work perfectly: mc-decrypt
often leaves an empty buffer; some other command (I forget which) puts
at the end of the buffer three dots that don't belong there; and
mailcrypt is supposed to install itself when you read GNUS, but it
doesn't seem to -- I have to type M-x mc-verify RET, for example,
instead of C-/ C-c or whatever the key sequence is supposed to be.

But overall it's useful.

First you'll need to get the PGP sources from
ftp.csua.berkeley.edu:/pub/cypherpunks/pgp.

Then just follow the directions in msvc.txt, and that ought to work.

Note that my patches insert preprocessor directives that look for the
constant "WIN32", and my makefiles define that constant. It would be
cleaner if the preprocessor directives looked instead for the constant
"_WIN32", and the makefiles did *not* define it -- the compiler defines
that for us.

Also I think one of the patches says something like "#if (_MSC_VER ==
800)"; the "==" should of course be changed to ">=".

What does Jeff Schiller say about adding a Win32 version to the MIT
distribution site? Jeff, is there a problem in integrating these changes
and including a Win32 version in the MIT distribution? Lots of us would
feel much more comfortable if it were included, rather than having all
these unofficial versions floating about. -- Eric

The problem is, thanks to boneheaded US law, its a pain to manage an
official distribution site for something like PGP, which is consider
munitions under US export law -- this means a site has to verify US
citizenship before allowing access to PGP.

I have offered my patches to the standard source code on several occasions,
and am still willing to email them to those who are deft with patch and
building source.

I have gotten PGP and mailcrypt to work with some modifications. There
are a some hooks into the unix version that you have to disable. My main
problem was that the dos command line was getting messed up by all of
the configuration options.

As far as I can tell, DOS can only handle 120 characters and mailcrypt
calls the dos pgp. The options were too long and got truncated when
running the pgp dos command. I got around that by deleting the extra
configuration options in the *.el files and setting them in the
config.txt instead.

There is an option on command.com to extend the command line buffer
size up to 255 characters. Use /U:255 with the command. I set my dos
prompt up this way by adding the following line to config.sys:

     shell=c:\windows\command.com /u:250 /e:1024 /p

And I also have the Cmd line property of my dos prompt window set to:

        C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM /u:250

I managed to get a win-32 version of pgp.exe. Though I
still got the same "pgp exited with a status of 13" messages
when trying to insert my public key in a mail message. When
looking at the *MailCrypt* buffer I saw pgp was trying to
find a keyring called mailcrypt.pgp.

The solution was to add

  (setq win32-quote-process-args t)

to my .emacs. I don't yet know if it will break anything
else I run. It's hasn't in a half day or so.

Also note, that I after setting this I could use the DOS
version of pgp.exe to insert my public key in a message but
neede the win-32 to decrypt or encrypt a message.

I'm running on NT 4.0.

Thanks for all the help everyone. It would be VERY GOOD if
someone who built a win-32 version could get a copy to
Jeff Schiller to include in the MIT distribution site. I
don't feel comfortable doing it not having built it myself
(or even completely understanding the difference between a
DOS and win-32 program and why it matters here).

Howard
