The default directory for emacs on unixy OS's is the directory in which you started emacs. That doesn't apply under NT/Win95, since you're clicking on an icon. Setting $HOME means that "~" will expand properly in filenames, but you won't start in $HOME, necessarily. To set the default directory for a new emacs process under NT 3.51, select the icon in the program manager, and then press ALT-ENTER, or select File->Properties. The "Working Directory" box in the properties dialog specifies the current directory for new emacsen. If you have a copy of the emacs icon in your personal or system startup program group, that's the one you should edit. You can do the same thing if you've added the kitchen sink to your MS-Office toolbar. From the "Office" menu, select "Customize". Under the "toolbar" tab, select the toolbar line for "emacs" and press the "edit" button. Once again, you have an "edit program item" dialog that lets you specify the startup directory. - David
